COLORADO SPRINGS. A diocesan-wide group that helped lay people grow in their faith recently held their final retreat on Feb. 17. Participants and the team who staffed the retreats met for a farewell party in the home-like upstairs meeting room of Mary’s House on the grounds of Holy Apostles Parish, remembering the blessings of the past seven years.

CASTLE ROCK. For a woman facing an unplanned pregnancy, an ultrasound image of her unborn child can serve as truth in love. The opening of a new pregnancy center in Castle Rock, which was aided by the Knights of Columbus at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Castle Rock, allows women facing unintended pregnancy in Douglas County to receive medical services and life-affirming counseling without having to drive to Denver or Colorado Springs.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Holiness and fun were the twin themes of the High School Rally that took place Jan. 19-21 at the Great Wolf Lodge in northern Colorado Springs.

The event, titled “Rooted in Christ,” from Colossans 2:7, offered the students a chance to hang out with friends, enjoy an indoor water park, and take part in retreat events that involved worship, catechesis, and for some, a life-changing experience of the power and love of the Holy Spirit.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Catherine Hammond hopes that people will focus on the important aspects of their lives before they die, so she and some friends have been putting up chalkboard signs around Colorado Springs inviting people to write on the boards about what they would like to do before they die. The boards have been up around town for a month, and Hammond is surprised and pleased by the results of the signs. They’ve served as conversation starters for downtown business people and as a moment of solidarity in a homeless person’s life.

COLORADO SPRINGS. For 20 years, the St. Thomas Aquinas Society Conference has been a fixture on the first weekend of August in Colorado Springs. Speakers from all over the world address the conference, and each year they provide a global perspective of the Catholic faith which seems to sum up the spiritual movements of the past century.

COLORADO SPRINGS. A teen and two mothers of large families from the Colorado Springs diocese will join the Order of Malta’s Western Association on its annual pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, which will take place May 2-10. The three hope for spiritual and physical healing as they journey to the place where many miraculous healings have happened since Mary appeared there 158 years ago. The three will be accompanied by Bill and Eileen Maggio, Knight and Dame of the Order.

Laity Engaging Laity has grown up some in the six years since Ed Gaffney, director of Mission Effectiveness for the Diocese of Colorado Springs, along with Brian Krutka of St. Dominic Parish in Security and Patty Degen from St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Colorado Springs struggled with the question of how to teach people that it was possible to have a rich, two-way, ongoing relationship with God.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Before Father Larry Solan, pastor of St. Patrick Parish, took a leave of absence to have surgery for cancer last July, he made an unusual request: he asked everyone in the parish to write him a note with something they wanted him to pray for during his recovery.
