New church will serve Catholics in eastern El Paso County

FALCON. St. Benedict Parish in Falcon, which has been celebrating Sunday Mass in a nearby school gym for more than a decade, will break ground on a long-awaited church construction project March 26. Bishop Michael Sheridan will preside at the groundbreaking after the 8:30 a.m. Mass.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Partners in Housing will hold a Mother’s Day event for 60 single mothers who are homeless and participating in the agency’s one-year housing program. The goal is to create a “family day” of fun and education on Mother’s Day, May 14, for mothers and their children who have experienced the trauma of homelessness and, in many cases, domestic violence. The agency is looking for donations of flowers that the children can give to their mothers and personal hygiene items for gift baskets. COLORADO SPRINGS. The 2017 Notre Dame Hesburgh Lecture, sponsored by the Notre Dame Club of Colorado Springs, will take place April 6 at 7 p.m. at Marian House soup kitchen, 14 W. Bijou St. The featured speaker will be Notre Dame economics professor James Sullivan. Together with Bill Evans, he is the co-founder of the Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities, a research center that works with service providers and government agencies to find research-driven solutions to poverty in the U.S. Sullivan and Evans have worked with Catholic Charities agencies across the nation.  For more information, contact Colin O’Neil at colino53@hotmail.com.

I have met several priests over the years who ended up leaving the active ministry of the priesthood. Two of them have been on my mind and in my prayers recently, having left the priesthood and the Church over issues connected to homosexuality.

Every community, inevitably, has a value or set of values that it considers fundamental, some basic good which positions every other claim to goodness. For most of the modern liberal democracies, for example, freedom and equality play this determining role in the moral discourse. In Communist societies, economic justice, construed as the elimination of the class structure, would provide such a foundation. In the context of German National Socialism, the defense of the Fatherland and the will of the Führer anchored the moral system, however corrupt.
