The Foundation

Laity Engaging Laity is focused on the laity and it’s call to impact society (see Why LEL?).  It is based on the Church’s teaching that “all pastoral initiatives must be set in relation to holiness”. (Novo Millennio Ineunte 30)  How we live our lives as Catholics, on our individual conversion journeys (our “universal call to holiness”, Lumen Gentium) is what impacts the lives of those around us and changes hearts.  “Our greatest need in the present historical moment is people who make God credible in this world by means of the enlightened faith they live.” (Pope Benedict XVI, “Christianity and the Crisis of Cultures”)  Consider the impact the original Christian communities had on the pagan Roman empire, they converted it by how they lived their lives, how they loved.

Although taking action in society and culture is necessary (Mt 25:31-46, sheep and goats), if we don’t do it out of love it is worth nothing (1 Cor 13:1-3, clanging cymbals).  We have to balance our busyness and our listening to God (Lk 10:38-42, Martha and Mary) so we can form the deep prayer life we need to really make an impact.  “True holiness does not mean a flight from the world; rather it lies in the effort to incarnate the Gospel in everyday life, in the family, at school and at work, and in the social and political environment.” (Pope John Paul II, Message to Catholic Charismatics)

The Approach

LEL helps each individual lives their lives in what they are called to do each day (e.g. family, work, school, parish), that is what will make the difference.  We all need to grow in our prayer lives, our relationship with God and with others if we are to get to heaven.  LEL meetings are focused on:

  • Learning:  A talk on a culture/faith growth topic
  • Reflection/Spiritual Direction:  How the topic impacts our spiritual lives and faith growth – relationship with God
  • Small Group:  A chance to share experiences related to the topic through case studies or exercises – relationship with people

LEL will help you live your faith more deeply in your everyday lives and be more effective in whatever ministries/activities to which you are called.  These relationships are depicted graphically  in the following chart.
