COLORADO SPRINGS. Most teens, as well as adults, like to be comfortable. We enjoy being around people who are like us and share similar interests.

Last October, during a 10-day mission trip to Brazil, one St. Mary’s High School senior discovered that sometimes life is best when you move outside of your comfort zone. The mission trip with a group from Our Lady of the Pines was the first international missions trip for Samuel Baldwin, and it changed his outlook on life and service.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Next month, school choice in Colorado will be in full swing, and residents do have many schools to choose from. But there is only one Catholic high school in southern Colorado, and there are many reasons for families to choose St. Mary’s High School. At St. Mary’s, students are inspired by faith, empowered by knowledge, and united by community.

COLORADO SPRINGS. For most Colorado residents it’s probably hard to remember the first time they saw snow. But for three international students at St. Mary’s High School, this year’s early snows provided their first glimpse of frozen precipitation. Maria Emilia Garcia Montes, known as Emi, Martin Garcia Morales, and Sebastian deJesus Hernandez Liquez are the three newest international students to attend St. Mary’s and are part of a new partnership the school has with “Faces & Our Culture,” which is a cultural exchange program between Guatemala and the United States.

COLORADO SPRINGS. The high school experience shapes much of who a person becomes. Academics help students achieve college goals and discern future career paths. Sports and clubs teach teamwork and hone leadership skills. And at faith-based schools, like St. Mary’s High School, students are also encouraged to explore and build their relationship with God.

COLORADO SPRINGS. When Kaden Westfall’s family left Colorado Springs on July 13 to drive to Ohio for the 2018 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) National Championships, he was hoping that he and his fellow St. Mary’s High School teammates would have a good experience at their first nationals. What he wasn’t expecting was for anyone on the team to come home with medals. When the team headed home a few days later, two of the St. Mary’s squads were second in the nation and Westfall was a national champion.

This year, Chuck Murphy, a 1954 SMHS graduate, and his wife, Mary Lou, will be honored for their years supporting not only this event, but the school itself. The annual event provides an opportunity for supporters of St. Mary’s to come together for fun and fellowship while raising money to support current and future Pirates.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Those who live in privilege often take much for granted, which is why mission trips are so eye opening for those who participate. In February 2018, Patrick Calhoun, a 2015 graduate of St. Mary’s High School, spent several weeks in Tanzania, Africa, with the University of Utah Moran Eye Center. That trip led him to establish a new nonprofit called Vision Restoration International...

COLORADO SPRINGS. When thinking about the aerospace industry, Colorado probably isn’t the first state to come to mind. But the state’s growing aerospace community — made up of  more than 500 companies and suppliers — now ranks it as the second-largest space economy in the nation. During the last two weeks of June, Stephen Sabish, a recent St. Mary’s High School graduate, had the opportunity to explore Colorado’s space industry as an intern with the Colorado Space Business Roundtable (CSBR).

COLORADO SPRINGS. In the more than 130-year history of St. Mary’s High School, the Grace Center for Athletics and Community Service has only been serving the Pirate family for the last almost 12 years. But during those years, the Grace Center has played a large and important role, not just in the St. Mary’s community, but in the greater Colorado Springs community. Now this vital part of the community is in need of new turf and track at the stadium.

I just finished attending several Masses and graduations from our Catholic schools, and each was such a gift and gave me hope for the future of our diocese.  The words of the pastors, principals and students let me know we are on the right track.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Not many high school juniors can say that they’ve been a part of their school’s baseball team for more than 10 years. But St. Mary’s High School junior Nick Baca has a hard time remembering a time in his life when St. Mary’s baseball wasn’t a part of it. He started as a bat boy at the age of five and continued in that role until he was 12. When he entered St. Mary’s as a freshman in 2015-2016, he resumed his Pirate baseball career.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Dance is a beautiful, often delicate, art. For two St. Mary’s High School freshmen who have qualified to dance at international events, it is also a fiercely competitive pursuit of excellence. Next month, Elizabeth Brodeur will compete in a World Irish dance competition, while Noelle Burtschi will compete at an international ballet competition in April.
