St. Gabriel the Archangel Quasi-Parish was established on Jan. 8, 1998, with an organizational meeting of
interested Catholic lay people. From then until July 1, the community was temporarily named Metro North
Mission. It was founded through the Metro North Regional Pastoral Council, the pastors and parish director, as
well as Father Paul Wicker, the Regional Episcopal Vicar.
The fi rst Mass was held on May 3, 1998, with Father Wicker the presiding celebrant and 233 people in
attendance. Bishop Richard C. Hanifen assigned Father Gus Stewart as the administrator of the new parish on
July 1, 1998. With his appointment, the church’s status was elevated from mission to that of “quasi-parish.”
Before purchasing the land and the eventual building of a church, Masses were celebrated at a local school
gymnasium. The purchase of land and building of the church were eased by a dowry from St Patrick Parish
that was publicly acknowledged on Sept. 27, 1998. In December 1999, St. Gabriel Quasi-Parish and the
Diocese of Colorado Springs bought 17 acres of land on which to build a new church. On his fi rst episcopal visit
June 11, 2000, Bishop Hanifen granted St. Gabriel full parish status. Father Stewart was installed as the parish’s
fi rst pastor. Ground was broken for a new church in October 2003, with Bishop Michael J. Sheridan presiding.
The new worship space was blessed on Dec. 19, 2004. Offi ces and classrooms were added in 2012.
Father C. Robert Manning was installed as pastor of St. Gabriel the Archangel on Aug. 5, 2007. Father Kirk
Slattery was installed as pastor of St. Gabriel the Archangel on March 18, 2012.
