NEW YORK. Turning the legend of Bigfoot on its head with plenty of laughs along the way comes the animated musical comedy “Smallfoot” (PG, Warner Bros.).

While definitely entertaining on the surface, the film — co-written by Karey Kirkpatrick and Clare Sera, and directed by Kirkpatrick (“Over the Hedge”) — involves underlying themes that Catholic parents will want to address with their kids.

NEW YORK. Writer-director Margaret Betts takes a stab at a genre that always seems to fascinate people, even those with no religious affiliation: nun movies.

Unfortunately, “Novitiate” (R, Sony Classics) falls short of presenting a well-rounded picture of what it is — or, in this case, was — like for a young woman to enter religious life and discern whether it’s right for her.
