DIOCESAN JUDGE (Full-Time/Exempt - Catholic Pastoral Center, Colorado Springs, CO)

Job Description:  

General Purpose: In a spirit of collaboration and charity, to further the spiritual and religious mission of the Diocese of Colorado Springs by assisting the Judicial Vicar by acting as Tribunal Judge performing duties such as reading, researching law, preparing Definitive Sentences and ruling in matrimonial cases. If the applicant is a priest, he will be given the title of Adjutant Judicial Vicar. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Intake of new petitions for a declaration of nullity:  Act as first point of contact with petitioners.  Determine case type.  Explain process, requirements, and rights of the parties.  Receive new formal petitions – read and analyze, create report identifying potential grounds, and decide whether to accept or reject case.

  • Research: Research canon law, Rotal jurisprudence, Papal allocutions, Apostolic Signatura responses and more for support of Judge’s role.  Enter, catalog, and maintain research for easy access.  Write law sections for Definitive Sentences in scholarly manner so that law section is tailored to the circumstances of the case.
  • Definitive Sentence:  Compose Definitive Sentences or voti in a timely manner. 
  • Make voti of every case.
  • Formal cases:  Offer advice to petitioners regarding witnesses to include or exclude in given case.  Evaluate witness testimony as presented, requesting additional witnesses, or other documentation, as necessary.  Participate in judicial exams, as needed.  Coordinate all appeals of negative decisions.
  • Pauline cases: Responsible for the instruction of Pauline cases, including receiving of petitions, creation of letters and decrees for Bishop’s and Judicial Vicar’s signatures, collection of witness testimony, etc.
  • Petrine and Non-Consummatum cases:  Responsible for all cases being sent to Rome.  Coordinate and communicate with petitioners’ processes and requirements.  Ensure case instruction is in accordance with norms.  Create letters and decrees for Bishop’s and Judicial Vicar’s signatures, collect witnesses’ testimony, coordinate and facilitate reports from the Defender of the Bond, Instructing Judge, and Bishop.  Organize cases according to Roman standards, photocopy, bind, and send cases to Rome.
  • Teach on canonical understanding of marriage, the difference processes, etc., for ongoing training of Advocates.

Perform other administrative duties as needed and under the direction of the Judicial Vicar.

Minimum Requirements:

      Education:   License in Canon Law (JCL).

      Experience:  Minimum of three years of Tribunal work required.  Reading proficiency in Latin, a plus.  Must be a Roman Catholic in good standing. 

      Other background demonstrating application of the following knowledge, skills,
      and abilities:

  •       Bilingual in English/Spanish highly preferred for this position
  •       Knowledge and expertise in Canon Law.
  •         Ability to work faithfully within Church magisterium and canonical process.
  •         Knowledge of Catholic Church and its organizational structure.
  •         Knowledge of the process for a declaration of nullity.

Job summary: We are seeking to further develop a vibrant faith formation program for elementary school-aged children and their families, helping children to take their first steps into a living relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church.

Duties and responsibilities:

 

  • Oversee faith formation programs for elementary school-aged children, helping children to experience the joy that comes from knowing the God who loves them and enabling them to interpret their experiences in the light of the Gospel.
  • Coordinate weekly religious education classes for children in grades K-5 and help children and their families prepare for the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, and Eucharist.
  • Coordinate with Ave Maria Catholic School teachers to assist students through sacramental preparation.
  • Develop fun, engaging and spiritually nourishing activities during the summer and at other times to help children to discover the joy and beauty of their Faith.
  • Work intensively with the families/parents of our children, re-proposing the Gospel to them and helping them to be the first and best catechists of their children. Find ways to help the family as a whole to experience the power of the Gospel and the help that comes from belonging to the Church community.
  • Recruit, train and support catechists and other volunteers through training, retreats, materials and feedback, helping them to grow in their own faith and experience the joy of sharing the gift that is our life in Christ. Maintain clear and constant communication with volunteers, including regarding schedules, safe environment training, etc.
  • Work together collaboratively with the other members of the faith formation team, pursuing a shared vision of the life that God desires to share with us and the joy of the Gospel.

Position Summary: 

Lives according to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Provides administrative, data entry, and customer service assistance to the Faith Formation programs and parishioners. Assists the Directors of Faith Formation (elementary, middle school, high school) and Director of OCIA. This position requires extensive knowledge of computer programs (Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher, Parish Soft, Teams and other programs as needed).  This position will also assist with Faith Formation records database in ParishSoft. Data Management:

Summary of Job Duties:  Working closely with the Director of Operations, the Accountant/Bookkeeper is responsible for the daily financial and accounting processes of the parish office. The Accountant/Bookkeeper assists the Director of Operations in financial record keeping, providing financial reporting and analysis, processes information for reports, assists in budgeting and forecasting for the parish, processes payroll and its related taxes and payroll filings for the paid staff of the parish, processes invoices for accounts payable, reconciles bank statements, and responds to ministry requests for budget and balance information.

The Accountant/Bookkeeper is personally invested in the financial stewardship of the parish so that, by providing accountability and facilitating transparency, the parish may better accomplish its mission. The Accountant/Bookkeeper should apply their skills to ensure the timely accuracy of the financial operations of the parish and facilitate the effectiveness of ongoing parish operations.

•Loads fiscal year budget data into the parish’s accounting system
•In conjunction with the Director of Operations, monitors actual versus budget expenditures of all cost centers
•Maintains a variety of reference binders and file of financial and accounting information for immediate availability
•Assists in the recording of parishioner contributions in parish database system and prepares annual contribution letters to all parishioners
•Calculates methodology paid to the Diocese
