The General Directory for Catechesis  mandates that the faith of adults must be continually enlightened, developed and protected, so that it may acquire that Christian wisdom which gives sense, unity and hope to the many experiences of personal, social and spiritual life.

We must always take into consideration the many and varied categories our adults fall into:

Those who consistently live their faith option and sincerely desire to deepen it.

Those who have been baptized but not sufficiently catechized.

Those who have fallen away from the faith and have a desire to return fully to it.

Those who are non-baptized or from Christian faiths not in full communion with the Catholic Church who wish to become Catholic.

These situations and circumstances require specific forms of catechesis:

  • Traditional forms of catechesis adapted to the liturgical year or in the form of missions
  • Ongoing catechesis of those who have a role in formation in the community
  • Catechesis for particularly significant events in life, such as Marriage or the Baptism of children
  • The RCIA process

The Office of Total Catholic Education supports the Parishes in developing and supporting these programs and the coordinators and catechists who work with adults.

Regis University’s Colorado Springs campus currently has a Theology Enrichment Program developed to provide classes for individuals who wish to earn a Certificate in Catholic Studies or Adult Spirituality. These classes can be taken for credit or audited. Regis also offers Degree Programs in Pastoral Administration and Nonprofit Management.

RCIA - The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

The rite of Christian initiation is designed for adults who, after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seek the living God and enter the way of faith and conversion as the Holy Spirit opens their heart. This rite includes not only the celebration of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Communion, but also all the rites belonging to the catechumenate. The Second Vatican Council restored this ancient practice, revised it and makes allowances for local traditions. The Office of Total Catholic Education helps and supports the Parish RCIA programs through formation of coordinators and catechists and with resources.
