The downcast face of the young woman still haunts me. As her boyfriend drove her to Planned Parenthood, her body, all slumped over, said it all. She didn’t have a choice. As they stopped their car near me, I gave her a small gift bag and told them about the free help at the Pregnancy Center. Emotionless, she let the bag fall from her fingers and drop to the floor of the car. She had already given up. Was she being forced into the abortion?
Today, my heart and mind are drawn back to this young woman, wondering how she is doing. Thinking back to that dreadful day, I am reminded that her boyfriend didn’t protect her and her baby. The government didn’t protect her with just laws. That day, she felt alone and abandoned.
A small group of us were there for her that day, praying for her, offering her help. Whatever happened after our encounter, I pray that she saw that someone cared enough to be out there for her and her baby. Most likely, her baby wasn’t saved that day, but we gave that encounter over to God and trusted that the Holy Spirit would work in her heart. Maybe our witness planted a seed that will eventually lead her and her boyfriend to God, repentance, and healing. We still pray for them and all the others who do not take us up on our offer to help.
For three years now, Sidewalk Advocacy teams, led by Julie Bailey, have been at the sidewalk near Planned Parenthood year-round helping women. As a result of this caring presence, at least three babies have been saved, there have been many hopeful saves, and there have been 70 turnarounds (getting women and men to go to the Pregnancy Center or other places for help instead of going to Planned Parenthood). We are calling on 40 Days for Life volunteers and other who feel inspired by God to join this year-round effort.
Since we know Planned Parenthood’s no-show rate goes up to 75% when people are outside their clinics praying, shouldn’t we be out there praying, not just during 40 Days for Life, but all year?
We are calling on an elite group of volunteers to join us in praying year-round at the sidewalk near Planned Parenthood on days in which abortions are performed.
To get involved, contact Michele Mason via phone call, text, or email at 719-659-2097 or firstname.lastname@example.org. If you are interested in volunteering every week, we will get you connected with a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday team. Your team leader will send out a weekly text, showing which hours are filled and where help is needed.
Following are the days and hours which still needed to be covered in prayer. Consider volunteering for one- or two-hour increments.
• Tuesdays: 11 a.m.-12 p.m., 12-1 p.m., 1-2 p.m., 4-5 p.m., 5-6 p.m.
• Wednesdays: 8-9 a.m., 12-1 p.m., 1-2 p.m., 2-3 p.m., 5-6 p.m.
• Saturdays: 11 a.m. -12 p.m., 1-2 p.m., 2-3 p.m.
For those who cannot participate year-round, the 40 Days for Life campaign begins Feb. 17.
