Purpose of the Chancellor's Office
The Chancellor is the principal notary of the Diocese of Colorado Springs. The Chancellor establishes the authenticity and validity of certain acts, the manner in which they are documented, and the manner in which the documentation that is produced will be maintained, protected, and secured. As such, the Chancellor is also the primary archivist of the Diocese. The Chancellor, as the Bishop’s delegate, also serves the Diocese through the administration of requests for dispensation regarding the Sacrament of Matrimony, and ensures that the norms for marriage preparation in the Diocese are followed.
Marriage preparation in the Diocese of Colorado Springs is carried out in accordance with the ‘General Decree: Regarding Matrimony’, which was promulgated on 3 October 2019, by the Most Reverend Michael J. Sheridan, S.Th.D., Bishop of Colorado Springs. It is expected that all couples preparing for marriage in the Diocese of Colorado Springs will be prepared in accordance with the particular law contained in these statutes, regardless of age or current living situation. Any requests to dispense from the requirements set forth in the decree must be made in writing to the Chancellor by the pastor of the couple and must include a reason for the request.
