SMHS golf outing set for Sept. 18

COLORADO SPRINGS. St. Mary’s High School is a family united by community. St. Mary’s Golf Classic is a great way for the Pirate community to not only renew relationships, but to support current and future Pirates as well. The 41st Annual Golf Classic is set for Sept. 18 at the Kissing Camels Golf Course, 3320 Mesa Rd., in Colorado Springs.

This year’s Golf Classic honors Roy Clennan for his long-term support and major sponsorship of the event. Check-in and registration begin at 11:30 a.m., and the day concludes with dinner starting at 5 p.m. at the Garden of the Gods Club. Online registration is available at Proceeds from the event go to support St. Mary’s Tuition Assistance Program. Nearly 35 percent of the St. Mary’s student body receives tuition assistance support through the program.

Those who love St. Mary’s and would like to get involved, but who aren’t golfers, can support the event by volunteering, said Penny Heiniger, who is organizing this year’s Golf Classic volunteers. Knowledge of the game of golf is not necessary to volunteer.

“It’s usually a beautiful day, and it’s not hard work,” Heiniger said. “You get to be outside and everyone participating is having such a great time that it makes for a really enjoyable volunteer experience.”

Volunteers are needed throughout the day, Heiniger said, to handle everything from setting up the registration area to placing signs on the course to handing out T-shirts. Volunteer shifts start at 9:30 a.m. and will continue throughout the day.

“It would be fabulous if most people who volunteer could do a two-hour shift,” Heiniger said. “We need a number of people volunteering throughout the day, but individual shifts don’t have to be long.”

Time spent volunteering at the Golf Classic counts toward parent service hours that all St. Mary’s families have to perform.

Mortgage Solutions Financial is once again the title sponsor of the event, and Murphy Constructors will again sponsor the dinner. For businesses or families interested in getting more involved, sponsorships are still available, ranging from dinner sponsor to supporting sponsor. All sponsorships include a tee sign with the sponsoring company’s logo, recognition in the tournament program, and recognition in St. Mary’s communications that reach around 4,000 homes. Most of the sponsorship levels also include the registration fee for one or more players. Those interested in sponsorships will find more information on the web page listed above or can obtain more information by emailing Mike Biondini at
