Sister of Charity Mary Helen McKenna dies at age 98
DELHI TOWNSHIP, Ohio. Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Mary Helen McKenna died May 29 at age 98. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 6. Burial followed in the Sisters of Charity Cemetery.
Sister Mary Helen was born Dec. 7, 1920 to John and Helen McKenna in Jackson, Michigan. She entered the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati in September, 1939. After earning bachelor’s degrees from the Athenaeum and the College of Mount St. Joseph, she earned a master’s degree in English from the University of Detroit. She was a teacher and elementary principal for more than 45 years in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Colorado and New Mexico. She taught at Sacred Heart School in Colorado Springs from 1976-77 and Pauline Memorial School from 1977-78. Sister Mary Helen also worked at parishes in the Diocese of Pueblo.
Sister Mary Helen later ministered at Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati as an assistant in the Child Life Activity Program, planning activities involving music, art, drama and poety. She remained there until 1995.
