COLORADO SPRINGS. Bishop Michael Sheridan is asking the faithful of the diocese to observe two days of prayer for peace during the month of September. On Sept. 9, the diocese will participate in a Day of Prayer for Peace in Our Communities, an initiative of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Sept. 9 is the feast of St. Peter Claver, a Spanish Jesuit priest known for his ministry to slaves. On Sept. 11, the diocese will observe the 15th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks by praying at Mass for the preservation of peace and justice.

BATON ROUGE, La. As Louisiana’s governor announced the federal government had declared a major disaster for the state Aug. 14, Catholic churches in the Baton Rouge Diocese called for volunteers to help those displaced by extreme flooding and asked flood victims what assistance they needed.

But the “small things” she did so captivated the world that she was showered with honorary degrees and other awards, almost universally praised by the media and sought out by popes, presidents, philanthropists and other figures of wealth and influence.

But I was enthused as I approached my first appointment right in the heart of the Old City.
