NEW YORK. “American Made” (R, Universal), the wild, fact-based story of airline pilot-turned-gun-runner Barry Seal (Tom Cruise), is far too turbulent for youngsters and even too bumpy for most of their elders.

BISHOP ROBERT BARRON: Ingrid’s Virtual Reality

(Spoiler alert — article contains plot details)
October 6, 2017  |  By BISHOP ROBERT BARRON
Matt Spicer’s dark comedy “Ingrid Goes West” is a telling and penetrating critique of the iPhone culture that has swallowed up so many young people today. Now I know: I have an evangelical ministry that uses social media and reaches out through iPhones and other similar devices. Moreover, I have been known from time to time even to use such instruments personally. So I’m not going to use this review as an excuse for a broad-brush dismissal of social media. But I will indeed use it to encourage you to see this film, which artfully explores the shadow side of living in virtual reality.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Living out the Catholic faith means working to make the world a better place. That goal aligned perfectly with the Future City competition, which one St. Mary’s High School student participated in all three years of middle school. Not only did the competition teach Alex Baburnic, now a sophomore at St. Mary’s, to look for physical ways to change the world, but it gave him the confidence that he could succeed in doing just that.

The Rosary of the Virgin Mary, which gradually took form in the second millennium under the guidance of the Spirit of God, is a prayer loved by countless Saints and encouraged by the Magisterium. Simple yet profound, it still remains, at the dawn of this third millennium, a prayer of great significance, destined to bring forth a harvest of holiness (St. John Paul II, Rosarium Virginis Mariae [RVM], 1)

October is the Month of the Holy Rosary, which feast is celebrated on October 7. In the years immediately following the Second Vatican Council the Rosary, a prayer treasured by Catholics for centuries, fell into widespread disuse. The Council’s laudable emphasis on the liturgy as the most important prayer of all Catholics meant, for many, that the Church was calling for less emphasis on the Rosary. “Yet, as Pope Paul VI made clear, not only does this prayer not conflict with the Liturgy, it sustains it, since it serves as an excellent introduction and a faithful echo of the Liturgy, enabling people to participate full and interiorly in it and to reap its fruits in their daily lives” (RVM, 4).
