The Colorado Catholic Herald to become diocesan magazine

By The Colorado Catholic Herald Staff

COLORADO SPRINGS. Effective Aug. 1, The Colorado Herald will change from a newspaper to a magazine format. The last newspaper will have a publication date of July 11. The new diocesan magazine will be published six times a year, beginning with a September/October 2025 issue.

“The challenges facing the newspaper industry are well-known, including rising newsprint costs, a dwindling number of functioning printing plants and ever-increasing postage prices,” said Veronica Ambuul, Herald editor-in-chief since 2014.

“Another challenge for diocesan publications is reaching younger Catholics,” Ambuul said. “The Herald is mailed to all registered parishioners who wish to receive it, but many younger individuals and families are not registered in a single parish, preferring to attend multiple parishes depending on Mass schedules, etc. By reducing our publishing frequency, we will be able to funnel more time and resources toward reaching unregistered families through the means of social media, e-newsletters, podcasts, etc.”

The Colorado Catholic Herald began in 1979 as the Pikes Peak Edition of the Denver Catholic Register, produced by John and Joanne Pearring out of their home office in Manitou Springs.

When the Diocese of Colorado Springs was established in 1984, it became an independent publication and took on the name of The Catholic Herald, with the Pearrings still at the helm. In 2005, the late Bishop Michael Sheridan made the decision to bring the production of the newspaper in-house and named Bill Howard as editor-in-chief. The newspaper was relaunched as The Colorado Catholic Herald in September 2005.

In 2006, the Catholic Press Association awarded the Herald first place in the General Excellence category among diocesan newspapers with circulations of 17,000-40,000.
More information about advertising rates and sizes for the new magazine will be available in August.
