Jean Twenge’s book “iGen” is one of the most fascinating — and depressing — texts I’ve read in the past decade. A professor of psychology at San Diego State University, Dr. Twenge has been, for years, studying trends among young Americans, and her most recent book focuses on the generation born between 1995 and 2012.

COLORADO SPRINGS. On Nov. 19, the Catholic Church will mark the first World Day of the Poor, as called for by Pope Francis. On that same day, the annual collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) will take place in parishes across the country, and it is a good opportunity to recognize and support organizations that are in the trenches doing God’s work at the local level.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Sydney Burtwistle’s 17th birthday was a memorable one; that day she landed in Rome for her first trip overseas. Two days later, she and her family were scheduled to go to the Vatican where they would meet Pope Francis. While exciting, the trip was bittersweet for Sydney and her family, who were invited to the Vatican so the youngest member of the Burtwistle family, Olivia, could be blessed by the Pope. Olivia was diagnosed with Juvenile Batten Disease in 2011, just two months shy of her eighth birthday.

This time of year always brings me back to my childhood. With fond nostalgia, I remember the pinecone turkeys we made in Girl Scouts, the pilgrim costumes my mother painstakingly sewed and the necklaces made of painted pasta that my sisters and I managed to pull apart, scattering raw macaroni all over the back seat of the car, on our way to grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Catherine Hammond hopes that people will focus on the important aspects of their lives before they die, so she and some friends have been putting up chalkboard signs around Colorado Springs inviting people to write on the boards about what they would like to do before they die. The boards have been up around town for a month, and Hammond is surprised and pleased by the results of the signs. They’ve served as conversation starters for downtown business people and as a moment of solidarity in a homeless person’s life.
