COLORADO SPRINGS. Laity Engaging Laity has grown up some in the six years since Ed Gaffney, director of Mission Effectiveness for the Diocese of Colorado Springs, along with Brian Krutka of St. Dominic Parish in Security and Patty Degen from St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Colorado Springs struggled with the question of how to teach people that it was possible to have a rich, two-way, ongoing relationship with God.

COLORADO SPRINGS. When Father Paul Wicker and Holy Apostles Parish began providing aid to the Catholic Church in Ukraine in 1995, the country had recently emerged from decades of Soviet rule and its citizens were struggling just to meet basic needs such as food and medical care. These days, Ukraine’s economy is much more robust, but helping the Catholic Church re-emerge after years of Communist repression is still an uphill battle, Father Wicker said.

COLORADO SPRINGS. The Colorado Springs St. Luke’s Guild of the Catholic Medical Association will hold its first retreat and conference March 10-11 at Franciscan Retreat Center on the grounds of Mount St. Francis. The event begins March 10 at 5 p.m. at the retreat center with a reception sponsored by Penrose-St. Francis Hospital, followed by dinner and stations of the cross at St. Francis of Assisi Church. On March 11, the conference continues with Mass celebrated by Bishop Michael Sheridan and talks by Dr. Abraham Nussbaum, Deacon Scotty Bowen, Larry Seidl of Penrose-St. Francis Hospital and Deacon Alan Rastrelli of Divine Mercy Supportive Care. The St. Cecilia Schola Children’s Choir, under the direction of Eliana Murphy-Ellis, will perform “Malice in the Palace: the Story of Esther” March 3-5 in the Corpus Christi school gym. COLORADO SPRINGS. The 2017 Notre Dame Hesburgh Lecture, sponsored by the Notre Dame Club of Colorado Springs, will take place April 6 at 7 p.m. at Marian House soup kitchen, 14 W. Bijou St. The featured speaker will be Notre Dame economics professor James Sullivan.
