NEW YORK. In 1946, less than 30 years after her death, aged 67, Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini was canonized by Pope Pius XII. Four years later, she was named the patron saint of immigrants. To judge by the luminous profile “Cabrini” (PG-13, Angel Studios), however, she might just as easily be regarded as the patroness of the indomitable.

Six Lent-worthy movies with conversion tales

NEW YORK. Lent is intended to be a period of ongoing or renewed conversion both for the faithful and for those about to enter the church as together they prepare for the annual celebration of the Lord’s passion, death and resurrection. Spiritual transformation can be a difficult experience to depict on screen but some films have succeeded in portraying it well.

Following, in alphabetical order, are five classic movies and one contemporary production that showcase people’s ability to change their lives for the better. Unless otherwise noted, the OSV News classification of each is A-II — adults and adolescents. Motion Picture Association ratings are listed where applicable. All six titles are available on disc and/or for streaming.

NEW YORK. Hollywood seems to find more drama in decaying marriages and divorce than in marital stability. Yet memorable films portraying successful marriages have appeared over the years. Following, in alphabetical order, are capsule reviews of six movies that depict happily spliced couples, together with their OSV News classifications and, if applicable, their Motion Picture Association ratings. NEW YORK. The musical comedy “Mean Girls” (PG-13, Paramount) comes with a more than two decade-long pedigree through all of which one unifying factor can be identified. The film is adapted by screenwriter Tina Fey from the Broadway theater version of the eponymous 2004 film, both of which she also penned.
