On May 25, our diocese will be blessed by the ordination of 12 men to the permanent diaconate. These men will join 100 brother deacons serving in our diocese, all of whom are configured in the form of Christ the Servant.  In fact, the word “deacon” comes from a Greek word, “diakonos,” which means “servant.” The Church asks deacons to exercise their ministry of service primarily in three parts:  word, altar and charity.

"But Peter and the apostles said in reply, ‘We must obey God rather than men.’” (Act 5:29).

In the March 15 issue of the Herald, “The Bishop’s Crozier” asked a question that has been asked for 2,000 years — a question that Jesus himself asked: “Do you believe this?”

And I will give them another heart and a new spirit I will put within them. From their bodies I will remove the hearts of stone, and give them hearts of flesh, so that they walk according to my statutes, taking care to keep my ordinances. Thus they will be my people, and I will be their God.”

Perhaps you have read C.S. Lewis’ book or seen the film adaptation of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.”  If so, you know at the end of the story there is a critical moment where Aslan the Lion, who represents Jesus Christ, restores life to all the creatures that the White Witch had turned into statues.

I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” – John 11:25-26

“Kerygma” is a Greek word meaning “proclamation.” The kerygma isn’t just a news announcement. It is the proclamation of salvation: that Jesus came to save us from sin and death, and that he invites us into relationship with him.
