COLORADO SPRINGS. Catholic Schools Week will be observed Jan. 30-Feb. 5. Due to coronavirus concerns, the annual All Schools Mass has been canceled. However, individual schools are finding creative ways to celebrate the event. Following is a listing of the various activities planned by schools in the diocese for Catholic Schools Week 2022.

(Editor’s Note: Following is the next installment of the Herald’s monthly series profiling a priest or deacon who is serving in our diocese. This issue, we feature Deacon Mark Griffith, who currently serves at St. Mary’s Cathedral.)

Deacon Mark Griffith hails from Brooklyn, New York, where he went to a Catholic elementary school.

He went to a public high school because he told his parents that he did not want to wear a uniform ever again. That lasted about six years until he started in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) and had to wear a uniform again.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Members of two religious orders based in India have moved to Colorado Springs to work as nurses at Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center. Both orders were invited by Carmelite of Mary Immaculate Father Abraham Kannampalackal, who serves as a chaplain at Penrose Hospital.

COLORADO SPRINGS.  Service isn’t something that happens only during the holiday seasons at St. Mary’s High School. But holiday service projects do hold a special place in the hearts of the community. This year students and advisers were thrilled to be able to give back in concrete ways after a year of restrictions due to the pandemic.

Father Gregory Bierbaum grew up in Beresford, South Dakota, where his parents owned and operated a ReXall Drug Store for decades. He has three younger brothers. As an adult, he worked in businesses in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Overland Park, Kansas. His father died in 2017 and his mother now lives in Olathe, Kansas.
