NEW YORK. “The afterlife is so random,” observes a character in the horror-comedy sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (PG-13, Warner Bros.). If the disorganized structure of returning director Tim Burton’s follow-up to the Reagan-era film that first made his reputation as a conjurer of Gothic atmosphere is anything to go by, it must be arbitrary indeed.

NEW YORK. Evident good intentions are not matched by dramatic craftsmanship in the fantasy “Harold and the Purple Crayon” (PG, Columbia). Though director Carlos Saldanha’s blend of animation and live action, adapted from the 1955 children’s book by Crockett Johnson, makes some respectable moral points, it’s not especially entertaining.

NEW YORK. Back in the early days of the Ford administration, disaster movies were all the rage. A capsized cruise ship, a skyscraper aflame, airplanes imperiled —the genre ran the gamut of mishaps before fading away at the end of the 1970s. Two decades later, advances in computer capabilities led to something of a revival, one product of which was 1996’s “Twister.”

    COLORADO SPRINGS. General Robert Titus, a highly decorated veteran of three wars, died Sept. 8 at age 91. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 23 at Corpus Christi Parish, followed by burial in the U.S. Air Force Academy Cemetery.
