Sister Lizabeth Rutherford dies at age 75

COLORADO SPRINGS. Sister of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration Lizabeth Rutherford died Dec. 17 at age 75 due to complications related to Parkinson’s Disease. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Jan. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Colorado Springs, followed by inurnment in Mount St. Francis cemetery.

Sister Lizabeth was born Dec. 13, 1946 in Flint, Michigan, the fifth child of Perry and Rita Rutherford. In 1950, the family moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico, where her father worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration on Aug. 12, 1967, and took final vows on July 19, 1975.

Sister Lizabeth received a bachelor’s degree in speech and hearing and a master’s degree in special education from the University of New Mexico as well as a master’s degree in therapeutic recreation from University of Northern Colorado.

She ministered as a teacher at St. Anthony Child Care Center in Albuquerque from 1971-1974, and as a special education teacher in Denver from 1974-2000. She also volunteered in the Victim Outreach Information Center for Jefferson County.

 In 2000, after the Los Alamos Cerro Grande Fire, she and her mother moved to Oppenheimer Place, where she became the Operations Manager and remained there until her retirement in August of 2020, when she moved to Mount St. Francis in Colorado Springs. She served on the Provincial Council from 2014 until she was admitted to Mount St. Francis Nursing Center in March of 2021.
