COLORADO SPRINGS. On April 23, the St. Mary’s High School community is going to “Rock the House” at The Antlers hotel during the school’s annual gala, which returns to an in-person event this year. Cocktails begin at 6 p.m., with dinner and the live auction starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased on the St. Mary’s website at smpirates.org/page/gala.

The theme of this year’s gala highlights the new house system at St. Mary’s, which went into effect at the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year. All students were assigned to one of four houses: Gallavan, Kelly, Loretto or Myers.

The house system was implemented by Principal Robyn Cross as a way to help students build relationships across classes, with the hope that the upperclassmen would be able to mentor the underclassmen.

The houses are named after key figures or groups in St. Mary’s history. Sister of Loretto Mary Columbia Gallavan was one of the members of her order who helped to establish St. Mary’s. The last Sister of Loretto to serve at St. Mary’s was Sister Gladys Ann Givan, the niece of Sister Gallavan; she taught at the school until the mid-1980s.

Msgr. William Kelly arrived at St. Mary’s in 1932 as Father Kelly and was named superintendent in 1934. He served the school until his death in 1960.

Father Rawley Myers was the school’s chaplain for many years, teaching religion and celebrating Masses. He was a fan of Pirate athletics, especially football, and is credited with coining the phrase “Pirate Pride.”

The event will look similar to past in-person galas, but there will be some changes. This year the silent auction will be conducted only online, which will allow St. Mary’s alumni and supporters in other locations to participate in the event.

“One positive that came out of COVID was that having the gala online allowed supporters from other areas to participate,” said Ramon Falt, director of events. “The community is excited to be back in person and re-establishing traditions like the Dessert Dash, but we’re also excited to continue having a way for those outside of our local area to participate.”

The silent auction will open on April 13 and will close on April 23 before the event. Falt said that, since many of the silent auction items are baskets, bidders will have a chance to view photos and descriptions of each item in the basket on the website.

All supporters, both local and those in other communities, will also be able to participate in the Gift from the Heart appeal. Those donations can all be made through the auction website. All proceeds from the Gala will go to the St. Mary’s Tuition Assistance Fund.
