Father Goodyear to celebrate Mass of the Holy Innocents Dec. 28 at St. Patrick
COLORADO SPRINGS. Father Michael Goodyear will celebrate the Mass of the Holy Innocents on Dec. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at St Patrick Church.
The Mass for the Feast of the Holy Innocents has been celebrated yearly in the Diocese of Colorado Springs since Father Bill Carmody initiated the practice in 1993. The feast was established by the Church to remember the young children massacred in Bethlehem by King Herod in his effort to kill Jesus, the Messiah.
Father Carmody felt it was important to give parents who have lost babies to miscarriage the opportunity to grieve for those children. He also proposed that participation in the Mass of the Holy Innocents was a good way for post-abortive women and men to start the healing process. Since its inception, the Mass of the Holy Innocents has also given comfort and consolation to parents who have lost children at any age.
Past participants have commented that the simple act of lighting a candle for their lost, beloved child has helped scatter the darkness such a loss can cause in one’s life.
