The Colorado Springs Council for Black Catholics will hold its annual Mardi Gras fundraiser, benefiting the St. Martin de Porres Scholarship Fund, on Feb. 25 from 6-11 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 567 Marquette in Security. COLORADO SPRINGS. The Colorado Springs St. Luke’s Guild of the Catholic Medical Association will hold its first retreat and conference March 10-11 at Franciscan Retreat Center on the grounds of Mount St. Francis. The event begins March 10 at 5 p.m. at the retreat center with a reception sponsored by Penrose-St. Francis Hospital, followed by dinner and stations of the cross at St. Francis of Assisi Church. On March 11, the conference continues with Mass celebrated by Bishop Michael Sheridan and talks by Dr. Abraham Nussbaum, Deacon Scotty Bowen, Larry Seidl of Penrose-St. Francis Hospital and Deacon Alan Rastrelli of Divine Mercy Supportive Care. COLORADO SPRINGS. The 2017 Notre Dame Hesburgh Lecture, sponsored by the Notre Dame Club of Colorado Springs, will take place April 6 at 7 p.m. at Marian House soup kitchen, 14 W. Bijou St. The featured speaker will be Notre Dame economics professor James Sullivan. The Netflix original series “The Crown,” which has to do with the last months of the reign of King George VI and the first years of the reign of his daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, is just the kind of program that Americans in particular seem naturally to love. It features beautiful photography of palaces, processions, and formal receptions; and it provides a behind-the-scenes look at the ne plus ultra of the British aristocracy. Consider it Downton Abbey on steroids.

In the 1990 statement, “In Support of Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools,” and again in the 2005 statement, “Renewing Our Commitment to Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools in the Third Millennium,” the U.S. bishops made three ambitious commitments:

·          Catholic schools will continue to provide a Gospel-based education of the highest quality.
