COLORADO SPRINGS. Beginning in May, a new type of prayer experience is being offered at Holy Apostles Parish. Called simply “Awaken,” the event is designed to appeal to people from all walks of life who want an intimate prayer experience and an opportunity to draw closer to God.

Nationally-known speaker and author Mary Beth Bonacci will give a talk at Holy Apostles Parish on May 15 at 6 p.m. in honor of the 50th anniversary of Humanae Vitae, Pope Paul VI’s encyclical on marriage and human sexuality. The event is sponsored by the Office of Marriage and Family Life and is open to priests, deacons and all  those in the diocese who are involved in marriage preparation and marriage enrichment. As Paul wrote in Philippians, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interest of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:3-5, NIV).

COLORADO SPRINGS. Bishop Michael Sheridan will celebrate the annual Blue Mass for law enforcement, fire and emergency personnel on May 8 at 12:10 p.m. at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Law enforcement personnel will receive St. Michael the Archangel coins, while fire department personnel will receive St. Florian coins. COLORADO SPRINGS. Bishop Michael Sheridan presented Steve Lander, Salida Pregnancy Resource Center (SPRC) Board President, with a $10,000 check to aid in their mission to assist women who are pregnant. This check is part of the fundraising proceeds of the 2017 Bishop’s Respect Life Dinner.

COLORADO SPRINGS. One of the first executive directors of Catholic Community Services in Colorado Springs was Jerry Knauf, who led the agency for three years in the mid-1970s. Knauf had put down roots in the Colorado Springs community, and he and his wife had adopted their oldest child through Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Denver, so he was a natural fit for the role.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Father Michael Butler, a priest who had served in the Diocese of Colorado Springs since 1988, died March 23 at age 71. Bishop Michael Sheridan celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial on April 5 at St. Patrick Church. Inurnment took place at the Shrine of Remembrance.

Teacher says, ‘Everytime a bell rings an angel gets his wings’”— concludes the harrowing story of George Bailey in the Frank Capra classic film “It’s a Wonderful Life.” On April 14, Grimes will bring some of that old Hollywood magic to the St. Mary’s High School Annual Gala, which this year is themed “Lights.
