COLORADO SPRINGS. Danielle Rose, a Catholic singer-songwriter, will give a free concert on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. at Shove Chapel. Rose’s five albums, released between 2001 and 2013, are available on itunes or at www.daniellerose.com. In 2004, Rose received the personal blessing of St. John Paul II when she presented him with her second album, “Mysteries,” a collection of meditations on the mysteries of the rosary. Prayer: why it’s so important, what it is, and how to do it were the topics of Dan Burke’s Mini-Retreat, “Into the Deep” on July 15 at Holy Apostles. Burke, founder of the Avila Institute for Spiritual Formation and the website www.spiritualdirection.com, addressed the purpose and practice of authentic Christian spirituality before a crowd of about 80 people. (Burke also wrote a book by the same name, subtitled, “Finding Peace Through Prayer,” published last year by The Dynamic Catholic Institute.)

Those who are mandated by their parishes as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs) are asked to consider volunteering 4-8 hours per month at area hospitals.  With the growing population in the Pikes Peak region and expanding hospital sites, the need for EMHCs is great. Those who are interested should contact Chaplain Theresa Gregoire in the Spiritual Care Department of Penrose-St. Francis Hospital at theresagregoire@centura.org.

MONUMENT. The Colorado Springs’ Catholic Committee on Scouting’s annual Religious Awards retreat will take place Oct. 14 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at St. Peter School, located at 124 First St. in Monument. The retreat is for Catholic and non-Catholic Christian girls and boys in the various scouting programs who wish to work on the religious awards of their faith. The retreat will also offer an alternate awards session for the Footsteps of America Saints, Women in Scripture and/or Models of Faith patch series. Cost is $15 for early registration or $20 for registrations received after Oct. 11. Lunch is provided. Scouts in grades K-3 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. COLORADO SPRINGS. The old adage “actions speak louder than words” applies perfectly to the latest addition to the Corpus Christi Parish grounds.  The support of the diocese for families, especially mothers, who have lost children has always been expressed verbally, but recently the Corpus Christi Youth Group (CCYG) has taken action to visually demonstrate the love and support of the diocese by installing a garden for mothers who are grieving the loss of a child.

The three Portuguese children to whom the Blessed Mother appeared six times in 1917 were not chosen at random but rather were open to Mary’s messages because of the spiritual preparation they had undergone — a lesson that we should all take to heart, Jesuit Father Mitch Pacwa told a record-breaking crowd at Pikes Peak Center in downtown Colorado Springs on Aug. 4.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Sacred Heart Parish in Colorado Springs is undertaking a major restoration of the church’s interior — 95 years after its last renovation in 1922.

“I am thrilled to put a process in place to make the church last for another 100 years,” said Holy Cross Father Ron Raab, pastor of Sacred Heart. “This is my real goal.”
