St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish’s EPIC Middle School Faith Formation group is presenting a live reenactment of Christian martyrdom on Oct. 27 from 5-9 p.m. The evening begins with “trunk or treat” at 5 p.m. followed by Mass at 6 p.m., a potluck dinner at 7 p.m. and “Walk with the Martyrs” from 7:30-9 p.m. Costumes are welcomed but should reflect saints or biblical characters. DENVER. The Catholic Medical Association held its 86th annual conference in Denver Sept. 6-9, bringing together over 750 medical professionals from across the nation.

The theme of this year’s conference was “Medicine at the Service of Marriage and Family,” emphasizing the practitioner’s mission to go beyond treating just the physical body and deal with patients in light of the social teaching of the Church.

COLORADO SPRINGS. High school is a time to investigate interests. This year students at St. Mary’s High School have more areas of interests in science to explore, thanks to three new semester-long classes. During the fall semester, marine biology and nuclear chemistry were added to the course catalog. In the spring semester, a new microbiology class will be added.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Submitting to and falling in love with God’s will was very gradual for me. I’ll never forget the first time I could envision myself as a priest celebrating Mass, giving homilies, and hearing confessions — it was exciting! As I pursued the seminary, I remember asking the Lord, “If it’s your will, open the doors,” and so far, he has. I am about to begin my third seminary year at St. Gregory the Great in Seward, Nebraska studying philosophy, having spent most of the summer at the parishes on the Eastern Plains of Colorado. I served four weeks in Cheyenne Wells and Kit Carson with Father Jason Keas, and four weeks in Burlington and Stratton with Father Carlos Gallardo.

Bishop Michael Sheridan will consecrate the Diocese of Colorado Springs to the Immaculate Heart of Mary during a Rosary Rally on Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. at Holy Apostles Parish. The consecration coincides with the 100th anniversary of the final apparition of the Blessed Mother at Fatima on Oct. 13, 1917. To help the faithful meditate more deeply on Mary’s message of conversion, spiritual reflections will appear in each issue of The Colorado Catholic Herald leading up to the consecration.

The event will feature carnival midway rides and games, free concerts and entertainment, a beer garden, wine tastings, food booths and more. Prayer: why it’s so important, what it is, and how to do it were the topics of Dan Burke’s Mini-Retreat, “Into the Deep” on July 15 at Holy Apostles. Burke, founder of the Avila Institute for Spiritual Formation and the website www.spiritualdirection.com, addressed the purpose and practice of authentic Christian spirituality before a crowd of about 80 people. (Burke also wrote a book by the same name, subtitled, “Finding Peace Through Prayer,” published last year by The Dynamic Catholic Institute.)
