FATIMA, Portugal. St. Jacinta’s “insatiable” thirst to sacrifice daily for souls and St. Francisco’s devotion to praying the rosary were on the hearts of pilgrims who joined more than half a million people to attend the May 13 Mass in Fatima, Portugal, during which the two children were canonized by Pope Francis. Pilgrims traveled by all modes of transportation — even walking sticks — from near and far to pay tribute on the 100th anniversary of the first of six once-per-month visions of Mary to three children of Fatima.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Four years ago this month, in May 2013, Colton Calandrella donned his Pirate green cap and gown and graduated from St. Mary’s High School. At graduation he was awarded the Spirit of Mary Award and the Theology Student of the Year Award, evidence of the importance of faith in his life. As he graduates this month from Olin Business Business School at Washington University in St. Louis, Calandrella is again being recognized, this time as one of the top business majors of 2017, but he continues to give all of the credit for his success to God.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Norman Hale, former principal of Corpus Christi School, was killed in a car accident in Kansas on April 5. He was 52 years old. Hale was born Nov. 19, 1964 in Mineral Wells, Texas. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University in Pueblo and a master’s degree from the University of Phoenix. Hale had also served as principal at Holy Trinity School and a football coach at St. Mary’s High School before moving to Nebraska in 2006. There he served as principal of St. Mary’s School in O’Neill and St. Patrick’s School in Elkhorn.  He is survived by his wife Carolyn and two sons.

COLORADO SPRINGS. Deacon Matt Kasper was named the Rookie Volunteer of the Year by the Community Advancing Public Safety (CAPS) program. Deacon Kasper joined the CAPS Team in April 2016 and was assigned to the Colorado Springs Fire Department’s chaplaincy unit. He is credited with over 550 volunteer hours and a record number of death call-outs — 40 in all. “Many of these tragic stories are compounded with family conflicts, which makes the role of a chaplain that much more delicate and difficult to navigate,” stated a press release from CAPS. “Matt handled each call with professionalism, grace and dignity.”
