COLORADO SPRINGS. Under the tightly attached black shroud that served as a roof, Deacon Dick Bowles was preparing for the 5:30 p.m. Mass on June 16 inside St. Paul Church. A new roof was scheduled to be put on the next day, but this evening, it consisted only of paper-thin tarps and long felt strips.

COLORADO SPRINGS. As area eighth graders are contemplating their high school choices, St. Mary’s High School invites them to join the Pirate student body for a day during one of the school’s upcoming Eighth Grade Shadow Days.

The first shadow day of the 2019-2020 school year is Wednesday, Oct. 23. Parents can join in that day, too, with a parent open house from 9-11 a.m., when they will hear from current students about the St. Mary’s difference.

DENVER. A Colorado Independent Reconciliation and Reparations Program to compensate abuse survivors in the Denver Archdiocese and the Colorado Springs and Pueblo dioceses opened Oct. 7.

Denver Archbishop Samuel Aquila, Bishop Michael Sheridan of Colorado Springs and Bishop Stephen Berg of Pueblo each issued statements announcing the start of the program, which is independent of church control. It will be overseen by an independent board, chaired by former U.S. Sen. Hank Brown of Colorado.

COLORADO SPRINGS. When Americans think of poverty, lack of material needs is usually what first comes to mind. Yet, humans can experience poverty in a number of different ways. That is the premise of a project undertaken by Father Joe Dygert’s Catholic Social Teaching class at St. Mary’s High School. When three current seniors reflected on their experiences with the project last year, they found their perspectives changed as they encountered the homeless of Colorado Springs through the project.

COLORADO SPRINGS. In 1994, after the Soviet Union broke up, a Ukrainian priest came to Holy Apostles Parish with no contacts and not knowing any English. He entered the sanctuary to pray and met Father Paul Wicker, former pastor of Holy Apostles. With the help of a Polish parishioner who translated, he was able to request assistance from the United States.

COLORADO SPRINGS. For the past two years, the Inferno Men’s ministry has been working to reach men from all walks and stages of life and help them to grow in their faith. Through monthly forums, which are informal gatherings where men can enjoy beer and fellowship, as well as the smaller core group meetings where men discuss their spiritual and moral challenges, Inferno has grown to a network of roughly 500 men around the Diocese of Colorado Springs.

COLORADO SPRINGS.  In honor of Priesthood Sunday on Sept. 29, the Serra Club of Colorado Springs is holding a Priesthood Appreciation Contest for youth ages Pre-K to high school. Students are invited to create an essay, poem, artwork, video, thank-you note or card describing how a priest has inspired them. Contestants will be divided into four age groups: Pre-K to first, grades 2-4, grades 5-8 and grades 9-12. Entries should be submitted by Oct. 15 to one’s parish office or via email at SerraCOSprings@diocs.net. Winners will be announced during Vocations Awareness Week, which begins Nov. 3.

Monsignor Donald Dunn dies at age 82

COLORADO SPRINGS. Msgr. Donald Dunn, who was a priest of the Diocese of Colorado Springs for more than 30 years, died Sept. 5 at age 82 in Wheat Ridge.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 16 at St. Patrick Church. Inurnment will take place at St. Mary’s Cathedral Columbarium at a later date.

Msgr. Dunn worked extensively with Catholic Charities agencies both in the Archdiocese of Denver and the Diocese of Colorado Springs. In his funeral homily, Bishop Emeritus Richard Hanifen compared Msgr. Dunn to the “seed that falls to the ground and bears much fruit” from the Gospel of John (John 12:23-28).

“I saw Don do that for over 62 years that I’ve known him,” Bishop Hanifen said.

MONUMENT. The St. Thomas Aquinas Society has teamed up with All For the Glory of God and the Diocese of Colorado Springs to bring Roy Schoeman back to Colorado. 

Paula Joy, coordinator of the annual diocesan Rosary Rally, was inspired to bring Schoeman in for the Third Annual Rosary Rally. In collaborating with Therese Lorentz of St. Thomas Aquinas Society, it was decided that working together for Schoeman’s return would give more opportunities for Coloradans to hear and meet him.
