Benedictine Sister Olive Therese Geiger dies at age 90

COLORADO SPRINGS. Benedictine Sister Olive Therese Geiger died Nov. 28.

A vigil will take place Dec. 19 at 6 p.m. at Benet Hill Monastery. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Dec. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Benet Hill, followed by interment in the monastery cemetery.

Sister Olive was born Nov. 9, 1932, in McCook, Nebraska, one of eight children born to William and Eve Geiger.

At age 13, she discerned a call to religious life and entered Mount St. Scholastical Monastery in Atchison, Kansas. She earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Mount St. Scholastica College and a bachelor’s degree in religious studies for adults from Regis University in Denver. She taught in schools in Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado.

She also taught individual music lessons and worked in parishes as a music director, pastoral administrator, director of religious education and spiritual director.

A serious accident caused Sister Olive to leave religious life for 10 years from 1970-1980, but she entered Benet Hill Monastery in 1980 and continued in pastoral ministry.

Sister Olive is survived by her brothers Paul, Gerald, and Conventual Fransican Father Bernard Geiger.
