COLORADO SPRINGS. Four years ago this month, in May 2013, Colton Calandrella donned his Pirate green cap and gown and graduated from St. Mary’s High School. At graduation he was awarded the Spirit of Mary Award and the Theology Student of the Year Award, evidence of the importance of faith in his life. As he graduates this month from Olin Business Business School at Washington University in St. Louis, Calandrella is again being recognized, this time as one of the top business majors of 2017, but he continues to give all of the credit for his success to God.

The program will be held at Corpus Christi Parish June 3-10; at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Colorado Springs and St. Rose of Lima Parish in Buena Vista June 10-17; at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Castle Rock June 17-24; at Holy Apostles Parish and St. Peter Parish in Monument June 24-July 1; at Divine Redeemer Parish July 8-15; at Our Lady of Victory Parish in Limon and St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Burlington July 15-22; and at St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish July 22-28. One of the most hope filled moments of the year for our poor and vulnerable came at the Easter Vigil last Saturday night when we welcomed our catechumens into the church. These new Catholic faithful are cause for celebration for so many reasons, but the greatest may be what they mean for charity. As Pope Paul VI writes in “Divinae Consortium Naturae”: “By means of these sacraments of Christian initiation, they thus receive in increasing measure the treasures of the divine life and advance toward the perfection of charity.” These newly initiated men, women, and children are reinforcements in the battle against the colossal specter of poverty in our community.
