Marriage Preparation Steps

Congratulations on your engagement!

The Church joyfully anticipates the opportunity to assist you in preparing for the biggest commitment of your life: your marriage.

Marriage preparation is meant to help you build strong foundations to resist the storms of life, to help you know each other in a deeper way, and to learn about the beautiful vision of marital love in God's Plan.

"The whole history of mankind is the history of the need of loving and being loved. Marriage is a 'school of love'..." — Pope St. John Paul II

  • FOCCUS will provide you with a personalized profile of your relationship.  Evaluation must be done with a facilitator at your parish. You will review your inventory with your facilitator over several evenings according to your needs. Check with your parish or Office of Marriage.

  • PREPARE-ENRICH: The main component of the program is an online survey you each complete in about 30-45 minutes. The items you respond to are based on research and are intended to help you identify the unique strengths and potential growth areas of your premarital relationship. Check with your parish or Office of Marriage.

You are encouraged to partake in an engaged couple’s retreat to be better prepared for your new life together.

  • Engaged Encounter weekend:For those couples seeking the opportunity to be with many other engaged and married couples, in a relaxed yet thorough, retreat style weekend, the Catholic Engaged Encounter of Colorado Springs or CONTACT, provides the time necessary for couples to work together to form Christ-centered virtues of intimacy, problem solving and communication. While similar to the wedding preparation provided within each parish, CONTACT weekends allow for greater exploration and sharing by married couples and chaplain in a dedicated, facilitated group setting. The weekend is divided into a series of presentations and couple's one on one discussions. The weekend builds on Marriage as Sacrament and most importantly fosters and engenders communal support leading to long term friendships and reliable mentors. To register, please go to

  • Equivalent Parish Based Retreat. Please check with your Pastor.

This step must be done at least one month prior to the wedding.

All documents must be ready: Baptismal certificates, any required dispensations and permissions. All certificates of completion (Marriage Prep Classes, NFP full formation, Pre-Marital Inventory, retreat when appropriate).

In this step, you will work with your Pastor on the preparation of your ceremony; you will discuss the details of the liturgy and your choice of readings. Plan also to meet with your parish music director and the marriage coordinator.
